Lady with falcon
Well, I’m pretty sure it’s safe to say that this is the longest hiatus I’ve ever taken from blogging, and I am so, so, SO sorry for all the radio silence on my end!

Basically, I got back from my UK/Europe book tour (more on that below) and had to dive right into my edits for the third book in the TOG series, and spent the rest of October and half of November working on them. And when I handed in the edits to my editor on November 15th, I woke up the next morning to find the first pass pages for THE ASSASSIN’S BLADE (the novellas bind-up...more on THAT below, too) waiting on my doorstep.

I actually had a TON of fun reading through all five novellas again, since it’s been so long since I wrote/worked on them, and I turned in the book in a day before my family descended on my house for Thanksgiving. Andddd THEN, after a crazy-busy holiday, I got my second round of edits for TOG3 this past Monday (aka two days ago). SO—that is a very long and somewhat convoluted explanation for the extreme lack of updating on this blog. I love working on the TOG series so much that it’s really, really easy for me to lose track of time when it comes to things like updating this blog, which I guess is a semi-good thing, but I figured that I *should* update you guys before this next round of edits makes me forget the world for the next few weeks. ;)

To jump back a bit, my UK/Europe book tour was INCREDIBLE. Seriously, it was one of the best experiences of my life. Meeting some of my international fans was such a delight and an honor, and I had an absolute blast hanging out with the Bloomsbury UK team (as well as my amazing foreign publishers). Rather than bombard you with endless photos, there are a few lurking on my twitter media feed (along with some photos from the Frankfurt Book Fair). In a nutshell, the tour was beyond anything I could have dreamed of—so, THANK YOU to Bloomsbury (you guys are the BEST) and to all the readers who came out to support my events!

While I’ve been working on Book 3, the awesome team at Bloomsbury also revealed the cover for THE ASSASSIN’S BLADE, which might be my favorite cover so far.

It’ll be out on March 4th, 2014, and if you have NO idea wtf I’m talking about, here’s the fancy little flap copy for the bind-up:

Celaena Sardothien is her kingdom’s most feared assassin. Though she works for the powerful and ruthless Assassin’s Guild, Celaena yields to no one and trusts only her fellow killer for hire, Sam.

When Celaena's scheming master, Arobynn Hamel, dispatches her on missions that take her from remote islands to hostile deserts, she finds herself acting independently of his wishes—and questioning her own allegiance. Along the way, she makes friends and enemies alike, and discovers that she feels far more for Sam than just friendship. But by defying Arobynn’s orders, Celaena risks unimaginable punishment, and with Sam by her side, he is in danger, too. They will have to risk it all if they hope to escape Arobynn’s clutches—and if they fail, they’ll lose not just a chance at freedom, but their lives . . .

A prequel to Throne of Glass, this collection of five novellas offers readers a deeper look into the history of this cunning assassin and her enthralling—and deadly—world.

Annnnd I feel like I’m forgetting some bit of news, because it’s been months and months since I updated, but right now my brain is totally in Book 3 mode (title reveal coming soon-ish). I’m still not free to talk that much about the book, but I WILL share some of the music that shaped major parts/sections of this book. Some of you know that I use music/playlists to outline my books, but I also do this weird thing where if I really, really connect a song with a part of the book, I’ll unofficially rename it (as if it were part of a TOG soundtrack).

So, these two songs inspired some major moments in Book 3:

Officially, this is called “What Are You Going To Do When You Are Not Saving The World?” and it’s by Hans Zimmer. UNOFFICIALLY, I call it “Rattle The Stars.” Read into that what you will.

(Side note: I watched Man of Steel on the plane to the UK, and though it wasn't my cup of tea, Henry Cavill is so insanely gorgeous that I was sweating the entire time and had to take off my scarf & sweatshirt. I wish I was joking.)

Again, officially, this is called “Shenzou” and it’s from the INCREDIBLE soundtrack to Gravity by Steven Price. But whenever I listen to it while working on Book 3, I call it “Do Not Let That Light Go Out.” And then I cry 100000 tears (Confession: I have never cried more while writing a book--and I can't even THINK about parts of Book 3 without bursting into tears.) I suggest listening to this piece as loud as your speakers/ears can go without exploding. (Sometimes, I feel really, really bad for my neighbors/neighborhood.)

(Another side note: Gravity was easily my favorite film of 2013, and I sobbed and sobbed and sobbed during the part where this music plays. Weeks later, I still haven’t been able to stop thinking about the movie.)

Annnnd that’s it for now! I think the next few months will be a bit calmer than this summer/fall (*knocks on wood*), so hopefully I’ll be able to update the blog a bit more frequently!

Hope everyone is well! <3

YAYYYYY! I'm totally not surprised that you 1) already know these pieces and 2) love them as much as I do! Clearly, we are on the same psychic music wavelength. ;)

So great to hear from you, Sierra! <3

Good to hear from you again Sarah!

I'm so glad you had fun on the international tour, and I wish I could've been there...maybe when it gets translated into Hebrew you could stop by in Tel Aviv :)

I can't wait for book 3 to come out, because I finally get to go back to Wendlyn! I absolutely loved QoG Book 2 back in the day, so I hope I get to see some of my favorite characters return.

And OMG, Henry Cavill! Yummy...

Honestly, selling the Hebrew rights would be a huge, huge dream come true for me, and I'd probably use it as an excuse to visit Israel again! :)

I am SO excited for you to read Book 3--there have been some big changes to what was on FP, but some of the more beloved characters have even MORE page time now. <3

SARAH! *glomp* It is so good to see you updating! I am so thrilled that you had such a good time in Europe. It must have been such an experience travelling overseas to meet your international fans! ^_^

And, to hear that you're past the second round of book edits for Book Three, well that makes me all the more excited for next year! I love the next part of the story and I am chomping at the bit to find out what changes you have made!

Plus there is the cover for "The Assassin's Blade". I am totally with you on thinking that it's the best cover so far. There is so much mystery and danger about Celaena in that cover. It is just perfect.

Those two songs are epic by the way. I haven't seen either movie (I'll probably see Man of Steel but I know I'll give Gravity a miss) but I do love the feelings that the songs evoke ^_^ Speaking of movies, have you got the chance to go see Disney's Frozen yet? If you haven't, you need to go see it. As far as adaptations of a beloved fairy tale go, Frozen is one of the best that I've seen. It ranks right up there with my favourite classics.

The one song that always gets me is this one,

It totally suits the main character of the movie, but I totally think that it fits Celaena as well ^_^

Happy Writing!

(And if you don't post anything between here and the new year, Merry Christmas and have a Happy New Year too! ^_^)

So glad you're back! Andover loved seeing pictures of your tour. Not to mention the cosplay? So badass. My friend thinks I should go as Celaena for next years Salt Lake comic con. Maybe I can convince Kyle to be dress up as my lovely other boyfriend. ;D

I can't say I'm sorry you've been so involved and distracted by your edits. Overall I think that will work out in our favor. And your confession about not crying more in any other book? Does that include the novellas because if so, I'm going to have to but a box of tissues and label it "For Book Three Ugly Tears." I'm scared. And insanely excited. I don't think I wrote you an email about Crown of Midnight but it was so so so wonderful. I can't wait to see where you take this story in book three. I am SO PUMPED!

In other news. I'm sending my contemporary out to agents. I'm terrified but determined and I know it's possible because you showed me it was. <3

Much love and happy thoughts to you in the revisions cave!

The ending to CROWN OF MIDNIGHT shattered me into itty bitty pieces and left me a bundle of nerves at 3:00 a.m. If this one is making you cry even more...I am going to die.

Holy hell, TOG3 is going to kill me, isn't it? I was catatonic for a WEEK after COM. Don't tell me that will be elongated to a month for this book. My life cannot handle it! This is actually truly terrifying me. I need to stop thinking about it right now or hyperventilating will ensue. Only slightly joking :P

LOVE THIS MUSIC! I'm just picturing Celaena being a total badass and ripping my heart to shreds mercilessly. Shenzou is... making my heart beat. You know what I mean?

So glad to see you back! If I could telekinetically send you editing soup, I would.

Joni- HI!!
Of course I understand you've been busy, but it's good to hear from you!

I don't have an e-reader and reading books on the computer isn't really my cuppa tea... so when I heard that the novellas were coming out in print I was SUPER EXCITED. But now that I see that cover- OH MY GRACIOUS I CAN'T WAIT!!! Gets me all kinds of eager to dive into the epic-beautiful-adventurous world you've created. ^^
Dec. 6th, 2013 03:20 pm (UTC)
Thanks for the update!

And wow, I think that's MY favoraite cover, too!!

And...lots of crying? Oh heart just skipped a beat! *bites nails*

Good luck with your edits!

That cover!
Sarah that cover is absolutely the best yet. This must be so exciting for you to have the novellas being printed on paper!

When are they giving you time to squeeze out your NA work? You've been so crazy busy lately but as a greedy little reader I don't feel too bad about that.

Come to Asia! Your books are selling really well here too :D

I am so sad that I have left to UK before getting a chance to meet you! Please come to Malaysia/Singapore! I will be your personal trip organizer hahaha. (a girl can dream)

I was thinking about Book 3 last night and was really happy when I woke up and saw your update! (yes finally!) Thinking about Book 3 makes me all warm inside. Can't wait!!

I was so excited to see an update to your LJ! An international tour - how cool! That's the stuff of dreams, I'm glad you had a great time :)

I was so happy to hear that the novellas are going to be buyable in hard copy form! It helps my OCD that I can place them next to ToG and CoM on the shelf. Also, I basically made a horrifying "SQUEEEE!" noise when I saw the cover - it is by FAR the most beautiful/wonderful/badass one yet!

And YESSSSS ToG novel 3!!! I can't wait. The end of CoM made me want to diiiiie because I wanted to read what happens next so badly. I'm excited to fall in love with Wendlyn all over again, the new and the old <3

I loved loved LOVED Gravity! So good! And thanks again for posting the music, your inspirational music helps inspire me when I'm writing too!

More holidays incoming, good luck with your editing, and enjoy the new years celebrations :)

I am so, so very excited for TOG3, which I'm sure you already know. As one of the people who constantly mentions my love for your books (and Chaol) on Twitter and other mediums, it should come as no surprise that I am dying for those novellas and for TOG3! I'm glad that you're working your way through the final pass pages for it ;)
Dec. 9th, 2013 06:10 pm (UTC)
So excited for TOG3
Like everyone else, I too am in withdrawal. When is TOG3 being released? Please say tomorrow. No but really...we can't wait long. I'm generally not a dramatic person so understand me when I say we might actually spontaneously combust if we have to wait long. If the novellas are being released in March, logic leads me to believe we'll have to wait until August next year and that makes my heart hurt. Ok, so maybe I am a dramatic person.

Love the Assasins Blade cover but on a sidenote: if the novellas take place before her days as the kings champion, why is she wearing the amulet Elena gave her while in the castle during her champion days?

You are fabulous!

Okay, I've devoured Throne of Glass 1 and fell in love. It took me 2 months to be able to get Crown of Midnight. Seriously, why does it take so much time deliver?!!
Anyway, I picked up CoM today and started. God, I love this series!! I cannot stress how much I'm looking forward to TOG3 even though I haven't finished 2 yet.
I sure am hoping for a 4 and 5 and 6 and much much more. It's easily a series I'd be glad to live with.
Can't wait for The Assassin's Blade as well.
You definitely will go a long way with this series (much more than you've already gone). I'm confident there will be a movie franchise soon. Just make sure they don't butcher your impeccable story and Celaena.
All the best <3

I'm Sarah J. Maas, the New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of the Throne of Glass series (Heir of Fire, Book 3, will be out in September 2014). The Assassin's Blade, a bind-up of all five TOG novellas releases March 2014!

I'm represented by the awesome and lovely Tamar Rydzinski of The Laura Dail Literary Agency. Starting in Spring 2015 - my New Adult Fantasy series, A Court of Thorns and Roses, will be published by Bloomsbury as well! Hooray!

In addition, Bloomsbury published four THRONE OF GLASS e-novellas, all set before the events of the novel. The novellas, The Assassin and the Pirate Lord, The Assassin and the Desert, The Assassin and the Underworld, and The Assassin and the Empire are available wherever Bloomsbury e-books are sold! In March 2014, the novellas will be bound up as one physical book in a collection called The Assassin's Blade! The collection will feature all four novellas, PLUS a fifth brand-new novella, PLUS a bunch of extra content, so... yay!
