So, when this time of year rolls around, one of the questions I get asked fairly often is “Are you doing NaNo?”
Usually, my answer is “Nope. My life is pretty much one big NaNo, or X-Y-Z deadline has made doing it impossible.”
(For those of you who don’t know wtf I’m talking about, NaNo = NaNoWriMo = National Novel Writing Month, a month-long challenge/event where thousands of people try to write a novel in 30 days. It has been going on for years, and is super inspiring and badass.)
I’ve spent past years watching NaNo participants with some degree of jealousy—the sense of community, the explosion of creative energy… It has always looked like SO MUCH FUN.
So, it feels like the stars aligned the year…in a few ways:
I’m a debut author, but I’ve been doing a lot of Thinking lately about my career—how I see it long-term, what I want from it, the things that matter the most to me. Recently, I became totally addicted to Alex Bracken’s “Black Betty Driving Mix” for her (amazing, amazing) novel, THE DARKEST MINDS. I listen to it when I’m cooking, when I’m cleaning, when I’m chilling out. And one of my favorite-favorite songs on the playlist (and of all time) is Bob Dylan’s “Forever Young.” (Which is also the freaking hardest song to find on youtube, so if you want to hear it, head on over to Alex's playlist. It's #10.)
So, the other night, I was cooking dinner (AKA revising went badly that day), and “Forever Young” started playing. And I just stood in my kitchen, listening—REALLY LISTENING—to the words.
And, I started thinking about how I’d listen to this song back when I was a teen and dream big, how it is one of Those Songs that reminds you of Who You Are and What You Want. And then I started thinking about those people at the events who told me that they’d stopped writing, or convinced themselves they weren’t good enough, or who wanted to write but were too afraid to type one word.
And I wound up listening to that song nearly a dozen times that night, especially the lines: “May your wishes all come true / May you always do for others / And let others do for you…”
See, a lot of my wishes HAVE come true. My BIGGEST wish—to be published—came true, and then some. And thanks to that wish coming true, I haven’t had much time to give back lately. But I am here today because someone remembered to reach back (my lovely friend and author/agent, Mandy Hubbard). And because I’ve been doing all that Thinking lately about what I Really Want from my career, and what means the most to me as a writer and author, I got this idea.
It’s not much. And as a published author, I now don’t usually have the luxury of the time to do this kind of stuff, but, again, the stars aligned this year, so…
If you are a writer, if you are thinking of doing NaNo, if you have wanted to write your whole life but have been too scared or had someone tell you it was a waste of your time…. If you’ve always wanted to try NaNo but have been too freaked out and/or intimidated…
If you’re in, I’m in.
I signed up for a NaNo account last week (and it scared the crap out of me, because OMG, it’s so Public and Official). So, add me and I’ll add you. Let’s rock NaNo together.
Write that story you’ve had in your heart for years. Write the story you started but didn’t finish. Hell, even if you don’t make the daily word count, just write. Write WITH me.
If I can do it, then you can do it, too.
So, we’ve got nine days until NaNo begins (on November 1st). And last week when I spoke to my BFFer, Susan Dennard, I mentioned wanting to do something special related to NaNo…. And she said that SHE had been wanting to do something, too (this is obvi why we’re BFFers).
See, one of the things that both of us have realized about What We Want To Do With Our Careers is this: pay it forward. In whatever way we can, whenever we can.
So, again, it’s not much. BUT if you participate in NaNo (and wind up winning), then you can enter into a raffle for a 5-page critique from Sooz and me. We’re actually going to pick TWO winners once NaNo is over.
If you want to enter, then go on over to Sooz’s blog (because Livejournal doesn’t support rafflecopter giveaways)! She also has some great advice/motivation (she’s a NaNo vet and will be writing TWO projects this year for NaNo. Whaaat!).
Throughout NaNo, both of us will be posting frequently on our blogs—advice, The Truth about how NaNo is actually going for us, and general inspiration/silliness/fun. Basically, this is just our way of encouraging all of you to WRITE, and our way of giving back.
So…Be brave. Sign up for NaNo. And then add me. Add Sooz. Follow the Pinterest board that we made to post daily bits of inspiration/snark/humor/hot guys. But just write. :)

- I will be sending in my second round of edits on TOG Book 2 any day now, which means I will be (somewhat) free for November.
- Thanks to travel, events, and life, I have been actively NOT WRITING new stuff for a few months. Which means I have been ACHING to write-write-write my little heart out. And what better time to do it than NaNo?
- Thanks to all those events, I’ve met a lot of incredible, incredible people. A lot of aspiring authors, actually. And (here is where I start squirming because I don’t particularly like tooting my own horn, but bear with me) at many of these events, AT LEAST one person has come up to me and told me that they are a) a writer b) stopped writing because they didn’t think they could do it, and c) hearing me talk about how I went from a teen writer to published author and kept with it for ten years inspired them to start writing again.

THIS IS SO EXCITINGGGG.
I wish I could participate in NaNo, but I have a major lack of time at the moment. Damn you, college education that I desperately need! All kidding aside, I'm going to go for it some day. But I definitely wish everyone who is doing it the best of luck! :D
And thank you so much, Sydney! I'm so glad that I know you, too! :)
i love love this!!! I can't do it this year but i wish i was, JUST to do it with you!!!
I did it (DID IT!) in 2010 in grad school-probably the worst/best decision of my life.
And you know, reading your stuff on FP always came to mind whenever i thought about writing. QOG/TOG was just SO FORMATIVE in those middle school/high school years! Before then, i thought all the stories in the universe had been told already by someone more talented than me.
Then when you finished AFL on yahoogroups, i realized that it wasn't the story that made everything you wrote seem amazing. It was the writing, the characters, the emotions, and the journey. i told myself that i could do it too... it just took a few years to make myself actually do nano!! :D :D
And damn! I wish you were doing NaNo this year, too! It would have been so fun!!!! :)
Oh man, I am STILL so terrified/excited at the thought of NaNo, but I really think it will be the perfect way to get me to focus on writing, and get over those blocks I'm having. If I write crap, that's okay. If I don't meet the daily word count, that's okay. If I don't come close to 50k, that's okay! I just want that motivation to KEEP ME WRITING!
This is going to be AWESOME. I'm so happy we're both taking the plunge this year, Sarah!
Also, I'm glad i'm not the only one who is freaked out by NaNo. It makes me feel less lame. ;)
WOOOT!
I just added you. Here is my page: http://www.nanowrimo.org/en/participant
I can't tell you how much I want to finish a book without hating it by the end (if I get there) and not doing a total overhaul of the plot. *sigh* Finding motivation is becoming increasingly more difficult. MUST GET OUT OF FOG! Perhaps this is just what I need!
Re: hating books by the end... Honestly, I think that's sometimes just a part of writing. I finished Book 2 of TOG and thought: "WTF HAVE I JUST WRITTEN!?" and then I let it sit for a while, went back to it, and realized... "Okay, it's not that bad." Yes, there was some work involved in fixing it up, but I think the hatred (and heavy rewriting) is just a part of the process. :)
P.S. I love, love TOG. Can't wait for the sequel!
And eee! Thank you re: TOG! So thrilled to hear that! <3
Hopefully I can make it through this year! Good luck to you, too. :3
Oh-- I've also added you as a buddy and sent you a good luck NaNo Mail. ^_^
And... are you going to be sharing a sneak peak / tag line for the novel that you're going to be writing?
Edited at 2012-10-22 06:54 pm (UTC)
As for sneak peak at what I'm writing for NaNo... Well, I'm going to be working on TOG Book 3, so a lot of it might be spoiler-y, but I'll see what I can do. :)
Sadly, for the first year in five years I don't think I'll be doing NaNo. I'm not at any point in my writing that I can write in the crazy, spaztic way that NaNo requires. I'm also looking for a new job which is proving to be ridiculously stressful. I'm definitely going to miss it this year but I will definitely be writing daily along with you!!!!
Hope all is well and I will be there cheering you along all month long!!!
Mer
<3
...lol, sorry. (I totally understand how hectic life can sometimes get.)
<3
I'm Here-> http://www.nanowrimo.org/en/participants/t
I love the "Punch fear in the face!" poster on pinterest! hah. That'll come in handy half way through :P
And I looove that poster, too. <3
also, i think it's awesome that you guys pay it forward. :)
I've never done it before but always wanted to. So scared! Eek.
So glad you're doing this Sarah! I can't wait to see what comes of it.
NaNoWriMo is an absolute blast! Three cheers for stars aligning and giving you enough free time and inspiration mojo to join the party. :D
This is a great idea, I have never heard of NaNoWriMo! I'm so excited (and a bit nervous). I added you as a buddy, my username is BrainStew. Goodbye all plans for November haha :)
xxx
And seriously, I am honored--HONORED--to hear that. :)
Just added you back!
I only just thought of an idea to write about, so hopefully, it won't be too tough for me this year, haha.
Good luck with NaNo, I'll be cheering you on.
GOOD LUCK TO YOU, TOO!
Musername is laurbor - will add you as well :) So exciting! It adds to the excitement and encouragement that you and Susan will be doing posts and stuff during the month. Am still in uni so may be in danger of going mad by the end of month when paper deadlines begin rolling in hehheh....BUT I'm just going to try and wake up earlier and write then :)
Best,
Loie
So yes, I've signed up for NaNoWriMo, and I've added you as well. I look forward to the month ahead!
And thank you so much for the kind words--you have no idea how much it means to me. :) :)
GOOD LUCK WITH NANO! YOU WILL ROCK IT! :D
LOVE your Pinterest board, by the way.
Also, I feel like I haven't spoken to you in FOREVERRRRR. As soon as I send in this round of edits (...at some point this/next week), I'm going to write you an email. :)
YAY FOR NANO!
Also, you look like Katniss in that profile photo. It makes the high school girl deep in side of me hate you a lil ;P
Hey it's an adventure right ??
(And YES! It's an awesome, awesome adventure!)
