So, I really should be working on my edits for Novella #2 right now (*wince*), but...given that I didn’t have the time to do a Thanksgiving-ish post (blame copyedits, not me!!), I figured I should AT LEAST take a few moments to do a New Year’s Resolution post.
To jump back a whole year…in 2011, I resolved to:
So, what did I actually wind up accomplishing?
Well, let’s start with the resolution that I totally FAILED: Get back into shape.
I still can’t run a mile. Or a block. BUT I went to the gym a bunch this year (though I fell off the exercise train from September-December thanks to being so busy). AND I plan on going to the gym at LEAST 3 days a week in 2012. Besides being good for my health, I get a lot of my BEST ideas while I’m working out. Getting to spend an hour or so just listening to music/brainstorming is actually really, really wonderful.
But those other resolutions? Well, I think I accomplished them.
I made QUEEN OF GLASS into the best book it can be. I made it into a book I’m proud of—a book I can’t wait to share with the world in Fall 2012. And I have my incredible editor to thank for that.
As for meeting people…Oh man, I’ve met so many amazing people in 2011—people who are now dear, dear friends. Friends I can’t imagine my life without. No matter what happens with QOG, I’ll be forever grateful that getting it published allowed me to come into contact with such lovely, wonderful people.
As for being brave—and fearless….I like to think that I accomplished that, too. I took some risks and made some changes, both in my personal life and with my writing, and they’ve changed me for the better. I reached out to people—and made new friends because of it. I tried new approaches to my writing and the way I viewed myself as a writer—and it paid off.
And as for ditching the word “impossible”…well, I like to think I did that, too. If you’d asked me a year ago if I thought I’d get the chance to publish these 4 QOG novellas, I probably would have laughed. And laughed even harder at the thought of those novellas being about Celaena’s backstory before she gets sent to the Salt Mines. I guess the story (which spans the 4 novellas) was just SO close to my heart that it seemed like a wish too big to come true.
When we were tossing around ideas for what the novellas would be about, Celaena’s backstory actually was not the frontrunner. While I really liked the other ideas we came up with, I just couldn’t shake the feeling that I NEEDED to write about her. So, not to toot my own horn too much, but…that resolution to be fearless and to fight for what I want…? And that resolution to ditch the word “impossible”? Well, those resolutions REALLY paid off.
And, I can’t say more right now, but I’ll hopefully be able to announce some news sometime in the next few weeks that further exemplifies all of this. :)
So, 2012 Resolutions.
Oh, 2012. Just writing “2012” makes me teary-eyed. Because 2012 is the year that my book—after TEN years of writing and dreaming and working—will finally, finally be on shelves.
But I only have one resolution for 2012:
To jump back a whole year…in 2011, I resolved to:
- To be brave. To be fearless. To embrace change, rather than to run from it. To fight for what I want, and how I wish my life to be.
- To revise QUEEN OF GLASS into the best possible book it can be.
- To continue meeting awesome and wonderful people. 2010 brought a bunch of incredible friends into my life, and I hope 2011 brings many more.
- Get the hell back into shape! By January 2012, my goal is to be able to run a mile without dying (yes, I can’t even do that right now…it’s so sad).
- Perhaps this goes hand-in-hand with Goal #1, but 2010 was the year I beat the odds. In 2010, I proved to myself that there are NO limits, and that NOTHING is impossible. So, in 2011, I’m ditching the word “impossible.” It’s banished from my vocabulary. As of this moment, “impossible” is nothing more than a 10-letter word.
So, what did I actually wind up accomplishing?
Well, let’s start with the resolution that I totally FAILED: Get back into shape.

But I only have one resolution for 2012:
Enjoy. Every. Moment. Of. It.
That’s all I want. I want to enjoy every day, every hour, every minute of 2012. Not just because the world might very well end in December (…I wish I was kidding), but because 2012 is my debut year. No matter how many books I publish in the future, this will be the first and only time I get to experience being a debut author.
I don’t want to spend the year living in doubt, constantly asking myself: “What If?” What will be, will be. I can choose to spend this year fretting over every little thing OR spend it celebrating the fact that my dream…the dream that seemed SO unlikely at times…that dream is finally coming true.
So, that’s all I want. To find it in myself to cast aside the doubts and learn to embrace my accomplishments. And that’s what I want for you guys, too. To marvel in your successes, to focus on the good—NOT the bad—and find joy in what you do.
Looking back at 2011, I’m overwhelmed with gratitude. Not just for the great things that have happened, but also for YOU guys. I really, truly think that any success on my end is because of YOUR enthusiasm and support for QUEEN OF GLASS. I couldn’t imagine a greater group of fans—or friends.
So, thank you. Thank you for making 2011 the BEST year of my life, thank you for waiting so patiently (okay, maybe a bit impatiently, too!) for QUEEN OF GLASS, thank you for all of the emails and comments and tweets. Maybe when I get to announce my super-awesome news, you guys will see just how far your enthusiasm and excitement went. :)
Here’s to 2012!!!!
And, just like last year, I want to know: what are YOUR resolutions?
~~~
Also, my dear friend Sooz is hosting an AWESOME giveaway on her blog to celebrate the launch of our new community blog, Pub Crawl (which will go live on January 9th)!! Go check it out!!
ALSO, ALSO: Sooz accidentally deleted the list of all her blog subscribers, so be sure to sign up again! And if you haven't already signed up for her blog, DO IT. It's an absolute delight.
Hooray!!!
What perfect way to end the world than with QoG xD? I'm so excited! And I love that we'll have these novellas soon to ease my excitement or perhaps make me even more excited to the point of explosion -_-. I hope that this year we get a chance to cross paths too!
Cheers!
And I REALLY hope that we get to meet at some point in 2012!!! *crosses fingers*
<3 <3
Yes! I would love to geek out and fangirl with/over you :P. Seriously if you're in my area though let me know, would love to actually meet you :D.
<3
1. To be more open to ...everything
2. To be brave and get out there and meet new people (sort of tied in to moving across country for a job in october and I really haven't met ppl and I dont have any sort of social life yet)
3. Exercise 3 x a week for my health & to feel good, inspired
4. Now that I'm sort of settled in my new place, get into a writing routine and focus on publishing the book I've been revising on/off for 5 years now
That's it. Happy New Year :)
Good luck with all of your resolutions--I'm rooting for you!!!!
And as far as friends go, I made a ton of friends in 2011, you being one of them, and I'm right there with you. Some of these people I now can't imagine my life without. I feel so blessed to have so many awesome people in my life. Here's to a fantastic 2012 and more friends and adventures and awesomeness. OH, and to QoG debuting!!! :)
<333
And I can't wait for 2013 to roll around so everyone can read TAKEN!!! I've been gushing about it to everyone. :) :) :)
<3 <3 <3 <3 <3 x infinity!
BTW, will we be getting information in regards to the first novella. It's coming out soon, yes? hehehe.
You'll be getting information on THE ASSASSIN AND THE PIRATE LORD (Novella #1) very, very soon!!!! :D :D :D
I love all of this, and I'm so glad your life is what you want it to be. I can't wait to read Queen of Glass later this year. ♥
I can't wait for the super awesome news, and, of course, for QoG and the novellas! <3
YAY FOR 2012!!!!!!
So much more Queen of Glass. I cannot wait!
And I ADORE your icon!! So pretty/lovely. <3
I am so freaking excited for this year. I cannot wait for all of the LTWF debuts, but obviously, especially yours. It was one of my first thoughts when it finally hit me that we were living in twenty-freaking-twelve that someday very soon I would get to hold Queen of Glass in my hands. I'm going to get to see it, feel, it, smell it and probably blubber all over it ridiculously soon (well, compared to how long we've BEEN waiting ;p) I think just the thought of QoG (and my lovely other boyfriend, of course,) is going to make 2012 a fantastic year.
I hope you do enjoy being a debut author. And I hope you find the time to share the excitement with all of us watching on the sidelines. You've earned every second of it.
And as for my resolutions, I've got a few-- do my best to write every day, blog more, and possibly the most fun, plan my wedding! I'm excited and keeping my fingers crossed that I don't get stressed over anything. So far it's been fun. :) I also want to get through my enormous to-read pile. It's taller than me (I had to split it in two) so I hope to tackle a lot of it before QoG comes out!
Now go back to working on that Novella! I want to read it soon, love!
Mer
<3
I freaking LOVE your resolutions! And OMG! Plan your wedding!!!! Congrats, congrats, congrats! :D :D :D
<3
And YAY for banishing IMPOSSIBLE from your vocab! *confetti*
My resolutions: Graduate with honors, get a better job, write something incredible.
Also: your resolutions KICK ASS.
Writing wise, I want to finish Shatterheart. My life got stupid and hectic and January 1st slipped through my fingers, but I'm so close. A day or two of good writing time and I could feasibly be done. So I will finish! And as soon as I do, I'll start revising. In so many ways, I know what I need to do. It's just a matter of having a finished draft to work with :) Plus, I have an idea for a new idea stirring in my head and it's getting more and more insistent. I can't wait to start fleshing it out into a full fledged idea, one that I can truly run with.
And finally, I want to read more. I got an absolute TON of books for Christmas (I gave my family a list of 30 something books and they delivered on almost all of them. Sadly, FINNIKIN OF THE ROCK was not one of them. I'm dying to read that book.). And I've been power-reading ever since. I forgot how much I love getting lost in a book. Hell, I hadn't even realized how little I'd been reading until I was finally doing it again. Why must college be so damn time consuming? ;)
I'm so excited that it's finally 2012. I can't wait to get my hands on QoG and you novellas and SS&D and so many other debut novels. It's going to be a fun year!
And tell that new idea to WAIT until you've finished/revised your book! :)
And have any of the books you've read been kick-ass awesome? Any that I absolutely MUST read??
YAY FOR 2012!
My resolutions are pretty solid goals...for the most part. My computer went and ate my NF book that I intended to self-publish at the end of the month (I. Hate. Computer crashes.). So that's being shunted along to like mid-April now.
Mid-April is also when I'm planning to self-publish my first novel, which we're doing a cover photoshoot for in a few weeks. We found someone completely perfect to be cover-Meera (the MC).
Then there's my non-concrete resolution, which yours can definitely fit with! I'm vowing to have no drama this year. None. Last year between some of my friends having little fights and relationship issues of my own, I ended up dealing with a whole lot of stress thanks to stupid drama.
2012? That is not happening.
By the way, any idea when QOG will be pre-orderable? (If that is not a word, it is now.)
And OMG, your poor book!!!!! God, I am so, so incredibly sorry. :(
And HOW COOL (about the photo shoot)!!!! WOW! I hope you can share the pictures (and cover) soon!!!!!
No drama is a PERFECT resolution. I love it. Though good luck dealing with whatever drama is left over!
I don't know when QOG (and the novellas) will be up for preorder, but I will hopefully have some info soon!!!
WOOHOOO FOR 2012!!! <3
I'm laughing about your comment about impatience. So looking forward to novella 1 - both reading it myself and pestering my friends to read it. yippee. I definitely spent some time over the holiday obsessing over QoG...
-eclectus
And I agree--I can't believe it's been SO LONG since QOG was on FP! Thank you so, so much for sticking with me all this time. It means the world to me.
I LOVE all your resolutions--especially the one to squeeze in more reading!! :) :)
Hope your 2012 is AMAZING!!! <3
Congrats. Its been a long journey. May 2012 bring you everything you envisioned.
I'm seriously honored. And humbled. And just...speechless.
<3
My resolution for this year is ... to be happy. I've been in a dark place for the past couple of years and in 2012 ... I'm really hoping to focus on the good in my life, instead of dwelling on the bad. Also, I changed my major in college to Creative Writing/English. Maybe someday I'll get to be an author too!
I love your resolution for 2012, and I wish you all the best (and more!) in accomplishing it. I KNOW that you'll be an author someday--I know it deep down in my bones. :)
<3 <3
So, I'll just have to settle for "thank you." You have no idea how far hearing this kind of stuff goes--like, no idea AT ALL. It makes all the long hours, all the tears, all the hard moments totally and completely worth it.
I wish I knew your name so I could properly thank you, but...whoever you are, please know that I appreciate your comment more than I can ever say. *hugs*
<3
And lol, I think I'm going to be a total MESS when I see QOG on shelves for the first time. ;)
Thanks again!!! <3
Seriously, thank you for your kind words. They mean so, so much.
