First things first: HUGE CONGRATS TO MY DARLING FRIENDS, AMIE KAUFMAN AND MEAGAN SPOONER, FOR SELLING THEIR INCREDIBLE YA NOVEL, WRECKED, TO DISNEY-HYPERION!!!! I had the privilege of reading an early version of WRECKED and it BLEW. ME. AWAY. The male lead is one of the HOTTEST characters I have ever read, and the world-building is astonishingly brilliant. Alas, you guys will have to wait until summer 2013 to read it, but…YAYYYYYYYY!!!!!
*ahem*
Well, to say that the past few weeks have been busy and exhausting is a severe understatement. But they’ve been busy and exhausting and also FANTASTIC and EXCITING.
I got my copyedits for THE ASSASSIN AND THE PIRATE LORD (QOG Novella #1) the Monday of Thanksgiving week, and had to turn them around in about one day. My initial thought process was something like: "!!!! Panic!!! Panic!!! Is there enough caffeine in my house for me to get through this?! Panic!! Panic!!"
…I have a tendency to overreact (but I think we’ve already established this).
But then I actually STARTED doing the copyedits, and…it was awesome. Fun, even! And I LEARNED things (mostly about commas and semi-colons).
Which was good because my copyedits for QUEEN OF GLASS arrived a day later, and I was given about 5 days to get them done & mailed back to Bloomsbury. Thank goodness I didn’t have any travel plans for Thanksgiving.
But even though copyedits were intense and required focus (and buying some colored pencils, because I somehow don’t own ANY), they were wonderful. Wonderful, if only because I was doing COPYEDITS. I used to DREAM of the day when I’d get to do this kinda stuff. So, I did all of my copyedits with a huge grin on my face.
And that grin only got wider, because I also saw the cover for THE ASSASSIN AND THE PIRATE LORD, and it blew me away. I was actually lying in bed (avoiding getting up to do some Thanksgiving cooking) when I got the email on my blackberry. And, okay, when I clicked on the “open attachment” icon, my stomach CLENCHED. Like, actually cramped up. (…Again with the overreacting.)
And when the image appeared on my phone…I burst into tears. The good kind. The kind that come from seeing your name on a cover, and the title, and knowing that everything looks exactly the way you’d dreamed it would (without even knowing that THAT was what you were dreaming of).
And then I ran through my house and into my office, sobbing like a crazy person, so I could see the cover on the computer screen—so I could sigh and squeal over every lovely detail. I then printed it out (it’s now displayed in my living room), AND made it my phone’s background, and I grin like a GIANT IDIOT every time I see it.
I really, truly can’t wait to share the cover for the first novella with you all (no idea when that will be, but hopefully soon)!!!!
Novella #2 (THE ASSASSIN AND THE DESERT) is due next week, and that means I’m going to be deep in my writing cave for a while. Because of this, I just wanted to write a quick Holiday (Book) Shopping Guide for those of you who actually do your holiday shopping early…and don’t wait until the last minute....like ME:
FINNIKIN OF THE ROCK by Melina Marchetta.
Perfect for: fantasy fans. Anddd just about anyone.
This was probably my favorite book of 2011. One of my all-time favorite novels, actually. This book…Oh, this book. THIS BOOK. It haunted me. It broke me apart. And put me back together. It did all of the things that a great book should do. I get emotional just talking about it. I love it to death. I can't wait for the sequel (FROI OF THE EXILES).
WITCHLANDERS by Lena Coakley.
Perfect for: Fantasy lovers, fans of SABRIEL and old-school fantasy, and anyone looking for a totally fresh and different sort of YA fantasy novel.
This book really, truly touched me. There was one line that caused me to burst into tears—and it’s been echoing in my mind ever since. All I want for Christmas is for Santa to bring me news that there will be a sequel!!!
ARCHANGEL by Sharon Shinn.
Perfect for: fantasy & sci-fi lovers, anyone who wants a unique take on angels, and anyone who loves a slow-building, edge-of-your-seat romance.
I’m late to the Sharon Shinn party, but I’m totally here to stay. I recently read ANGELICA and loved it so much that I immediately ordered the other 3 books in the SAMARIA series (ANGEL-SEEKER, JOVAH’S ANGEL, and THE ALLELUIA FILES). Last week, I also read SUMMERS AT CASTLE AUBURN and TROUBLED WATERS and they were sooo lovely. TROUBLED WATERS felt like something Miyazaki might make (for an adult animated film). They’re comfort books. And smart books, too. And just absolutely wonderful.
UNEARTHLY by Cynthia Hand.
Perfect for: anyone looking for a unique angel book, romance (and love-triangle) fans, cowboy fans…fans of ANYTHING.
Another 2011 favorite of mine. I gobbled this book down. And then told some other people to read it, who ALSO gobbled down this book. I’m ACHING for the sequel. This is YA at its best.
THE FORGOTTEN BEASTS OF ELD by Patricia A. McKillip.
Perfect for: fantasy fans, old-school fantasy fans, your friends who tend to be a tad more into literary stuff, and anyone who loves jaw-droppingly gorgeous prose.
So, I’ve already waxed poetic about my love for ALPHABET OF THORN and all things Patricia A. McKillip. THE FORGOTTEN BEASTS OF ELD was another one that swept me away. I love Pat’s books so much that I ordered ALL of them. Even the out-of-print ones. I’ve yet to read all of them, but…I love seeing them on my shelf, waiting for me.
THE GIRL OF FIRE AND THORNS by Rae Carson.
Perfect for: fantasy fans, kick-butt heroine fans, fans of diversity in YA, fans of Tamora Pierce and Robin McKinley, fans sick of stick-thin heroines, fans of sweeping romance and high stakes and expert world-building.
Okay, from that alone, I think it’s pretty obvious that I loved this book. I would give this book to anyone to read. It’s a book that I want my future daughter (if I have one) to read. It’s a book I want my FRIENDS to read. It’s empowering and delightful and reminded me why I love to read and write high fantasy.
And, okay, I’ve totally run out of room, but these books are also HIGHLY recommended (and books I’d tell anyone to buy):
BRIGHTLY WOVEN by Alex Bracken, OUTLANDER by Diana Gabaldon, MISTWOOD (and NIGHTSPELL) by Leah Cypess, and BLACK SHIPS by Jo Graham.
Okay, off to the Writing Cave! Happy Holidays to all of you!!! <3

And congratulations on getting copy edits! That's SO exciting!! And you must be triply excited to get to reveal the cover soon. WOOO!
Thank youuu. Copyedits were a TON of fun, actually. Like, super intense, but fun. I felt all Professional-Writer-ish. :)
AHHH, 2012 IS ALMOST HEREEEEEE.
And you got me super excited about all those books. Even more things to ask for for Christmas :) Always a plus
And if you wind up reading any of those books, let me know what you think about them!!! :)
Just out of curiosity how many coffees do you drink a day? I am caffeine junkie too and I have at least four a day but here we have espressos which is way stronger!
Fall 2012 still seems pretty far away--though at least the novellas will hopefully make the time go by quickly!!! :)
And Chaol...Oh, Chaol. He's always in my heart, too. :) :)
As for coffee...I have about 2 or 3 cups in the morning, and then have some other source of caffeine (a soda, or a cup of caffeinated tea) later in the afternoon. Somedays, it's way worse (when I'll have 3-4 cups of coffee a day). :P
Just thought I'd leave a comment since I've been reading your blog for ages and read parts of QoG when it was on Fictionpress :) :)
xx
I definitely have to check out some of those books. They all look wonderful! <3
I can't WAIT for your cover unveiling! I bet it'd be epic! Oh, btw, did you read The Unicorn Chronicles? Someone made a fan movie trailer for it and it's like SUPER awesome!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bP1dTbs9
Excuse my randomness! LoL. I can't wait to read your books!
AND YES I DID READ THE UNICORN CHRONICLES AND OMFG THAT TRAILER!!!!!!!! Aghhhhhhh.
And heeeeee! I can't wait for YOU to read my books! I really, truly hope that you like them!!! :D
I've been meaning to get around rereading Finnikin, just so I remember everything before I read Froi.
Have you read the Obernewtyn series by Isobelle Carmody? I think you would lke it :)
I HAVEN'T read that series!! I'll have to check it out!! Thanks for the rec! :D
Secondly, I want to ask two questions: is there any chance that the four novellas will be available in some kind of paperback format? I'm not exactly proficient with internet shopping and whatnot, and I prefer reading paper books besides. Also, do you know whether the actual novel will be released in Hong Kong? I live there and it will KILL me if I can't get a copy on hand when it's released.
Thanks! :)
-Amanda
YES! Come April 2012, it'll have been 10 years since I started posting QOG on FP (actually, in a few weeks, it'll be 10 years since I came up with the idea for QOG..wow.). Crazy how time flies, right??
As for the novellas being available in paperback...They're only going to be ebooks (for the time being)...As we get closer to Novella #1's release, I'm sure I'll be posting about how you can read them (if you don't have an ereader device).
And I don't know if QOG Book 1 will be available in Hong Kong! If it isn't, then I know that the Book Depository is a GREAT international website that ships books anywhere in the world (and shipping is free): http://www.bookdepository.com/
And re: A FARAWAY LAND...Alas, that novel is on the backburner for the time being. Though someday...someday, I'll try to get it pubbed. I <3 it too much not to (though I think it'd be adult fantasy, not YA).
SO EXCITED FOR THE HOBBIT MOVIE. AGHHHH.
CanNOT wait to see your cover. :)
And isn't FINNIKIN soooo wonderful? *sigh* That book just...killed me.
(Erm. Can't remember if I've ever commented here before, but you likely know the gist: read QoG way back in the days of Fictionpress actually Fanfiction.net and am super-stupid-stoked about the novellas. Reading your blog made me get over a giant nasty lump of writer's block that had consumed my life for about two years. Even reading it now always makes me want to write.)
P.S. I hope you've seen the YA Lit episode of the Simpsons. It's called "The Book Job" (episode 6 of this season) and features lazy writers, evil goons from the publishing industry, a classic heist story, and Neil Gaiman as himself. Did I mention it's about YA Lit?
Anyway, can't wait to see the cover!
And wow--I'm honored (and thrilled) that my blog helped you get over writer's block!!! I don't even know what to SAY to that. :)
And I actually missed the YA Lit episode of the Simpsons!!!! *sigh* I wonder if it'll be on hulu or netflix at some point...
Thanks again!
I cannot WAIT to see the cover for The Assassin and the Pirate Lord. I'm probably going to start crying when I see it! Do you think they'll ever make the novellas into anything more than e-books?
Also, just in case anyone reads through the comments (like I totally do) I cannot keep quiet about Finnikin of the Rock. I took the recommendation from you and I completely agree about it being my favorite book of 2011 and one of my absolute favorites of all time. I think of the book and I get completely torn up about everything in it. The characters, the dialogue, everything. It was breathtaking to read and I cried and laughed and LIVED with those characters. I cannot recommend it enough! THANK YOU, SARAH!
Good luck to you in the writing cave! I'm sorely missing LTWF!!! My mornings feel so incomplete without reading a new post. I hope you're all having a blast creating the new site! I can't wait!
I also cannot wait to hear the release date of QoG so I can start counting down the days. I miss my lovely other boyfriend so much. :(
Looking forward to hearing from you again!

Re: novellas...Right now, the plan is only to release them as ebooks! And I certainly hope that someday all the novellas will get released in hard/bound copy!
Couldn't agree more about FINNIKIN. I'm so, so excited for FROI...yet also super-nervous. I don't want to have my heart shredded again!!!!
And WITCHLANDERS is sooo good. Such a unique and awesome world.
So excited!!!!!!! Even though I'm super busy, I suppose I now have a reason to turn on my pc and stalk your blog for the big reveal!
Aaaaaah!!!
-Kelly de Groot
And EEE! A Tolkien-Maas bookshelf!!! I can die happy now. :D :D
Hope you're well!
:/
The Girl of Fire and Thorns sounds EXTREMELY problematic, from what I've heard. I've heard that this book is about a girl who is fat who loses that fat by being starved on a journey through the desert and then being happy about it because it somehow makes everything better. I don't get how that's empowering at all. It sounds like it's totally stigmatizing fat bodies and assigning moral values to food/bodies ("good" bodies, "good" food, etc. etc.). Moreover, if you were unhappy with your body before, losing weight isn't necessarily going to make you happy, so it sounds... really, really problematic. Of course, I've yet to read it...
You know, while I can certainly see why people might say that, I never took the heroine's weight loss to be problematic in that sense. And she's never SUPER skinny by the end--she's still full-bodied. I personally thought that her weight loss was used to highlight the superficiality of others--like, how ridiculous it was that people suddenly saw her worth once she'd lost a lot of weight....as if weight and worth are somehow tied together (which they are certainly not--and that's a point that Rae really drives home).
Everyone is certainly entitled to their opinion (after all, that's what makes reading/discussing books so FUN!), but I'm pretty sensitive about this kinda stuff, and I found the book to be very empowering. :)
I'm sensitive about this issue too, that's why I commented, haha. I'm just gonna have to read the book and find out for myself! Now that I've heard you're perspective I'm intrigued to see how it actually plays out.
