Time For A Reading Binge!

QoG Girl staff
Well, I survived Revisions: Part Deux.

Like, literally survived. Last week, just as I was going into Crunch Time, I came down with one of the worst colds I’ve ever had in my LIFE. And, unfortunately, because of my deadline, I couldn’t take a single day off to rest. And “non-drowsy” cold medicine? Yeah. That’s a LIE. Try world-building when you’re so out of it you can barely remember your own name. Horrible, horrible, horrible.

So, I pretty much lived on alkaseltzer-plus for five days. BUT I emerged victorious, because:
  1. I sent in my edits today!!! HOORAY!!!!
  2.  I frakking LOVE the work I did. I couldn’t stop grinning while I read through the manuscript one last time before sending it.
  3. Despite the misery of being sick, I’m kinda proud of myself for fighting through the vicious cold. It makes me feel like a Hardcore Real Author Person.

So, now that I’ve sent in my edits, what am I going to do?

READING BINGE.

Yep. I’m taking the next few days off from working on other projects and just READING. Besides, I can’t do much else, since I’m 95% sure I broke my toe this past weekend (…I smashed my foot into the 10-pound weight I’ve had sitting on my office floor for months…totally karma for never using it). Seriously--I can't even drive my car. :(

Anyway, I’m already halfway through CLEOPATRA’S MOON by Vicky Alvear Shecter. It’s super-fascinating and intense. And I’m definitely going to be Cleopatra for Halloween (so you KNOW the book is good).

Once I finish it, I’ve got these lovely books to keep me company:

And then I’ve got BEHEMOTH and GOLIATH by Scott Westerfeld to read, but they might have to wait until my next reading binge, because I have some secret-y stuff due by the end of October/early November, and I can’t take *that* many days off.

Annnnnd…in case you were wondering what I’m obsessively listening to today…

If my toe weren’t broken, I would be dancing through my house to that song right now. It’s my “I’m Done With Revisions…For Now!” victory jam.

What are you guys reading??

Hope you’re all well!!

CONGRATULATIONS!!! :D

I just finished Daughter of Smoke and Bone last week and couldn't put it down. I literally finished it in something like four hours. I'm not reading anything (fun) right now though. I'm so behind on uni stuff and it's not even October!

Enjoy your reading days off!!

I'm glad you're feeling better!! And yay for finished revisions (part deux)! I just bought Daughter of Smoke & Bone today, but the third book of Abarat came out today too, so that's what I'm going to start this evening. Also, Paris to Die For, Anna Dressed in Blood, and Wildwood are on my reading list.

There are SO MANY amazing books coming out right now!! I popped into B&N on Saturday night and walked out with FOUR books...and that was only after I had to force myself to put back THREE OTHERS. *sigh* So many books, so little time!

And let me know how ANNA DRESSED IN BLOOD is! It looks fabulous. :)

I have a lot of reading to do for school, nothing to bad and since I've just read "A Room of One's Own" for fun, I don't think I have the right to complain. I've also just read Robin McKinley's 'Sunshine' which was pretty good, the only thing I didn't like were the long background history dumps, sometimes in the middle of the a conversation. I'm thinking of reading American Gods by Neil Gaiman next, no matter how much reading I have for school.

Oooh, SUNSHINE has been on my TBR list for a while! I ADORE Robin McKinley. I've heard such great things about that book!!

And AMERICAN GODS...I haven't read it, but it's sitting on my bookshelf, waiting to be read! I really should read it one of these days...

Read The Night Circus, it's a must if you enjoy magic at all--great imagination in that one. Did a little nonfiction reading about the French Revolution in between, but now I've moved onto Gaiman's The Graveyard Book. And will probably be picking up Ender's Game later on this week, since I've never read it...

Oooh, the cover for THE NIGHT CIRCUS is sooo gorgeous. I'm glad to hear that the book lives up to all the hype!!!

And THE GRAVEYARD BOOK...omfg, I LOVE that book SO much. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!!! :)

Goodness! I'm so sorry that you were so sick. And that you (possibly) broke your toe. BUT...I'me SUPER excited that you got your edits sent in! AND that you'll be working on secret-y stuff soon. You're awesome. *hugs*

As for books, I just finished Midnight Pearls by Debbie Viguie today. As in, 50 minutes ago, ha ha. It was an enjoyable little read. :)

Next on my list is Mrs. Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children. I actually bought that when you and the LTWF girls were in Jax and we went to Barnes & Noble. I'm looking forward to it! :D

YAY! You're finished with revisions! I think you totally deserve some quality reading time. Haha. I haven't read the Fableheaven book but I liked all 3 of the others so you'd probably enjoy them very much!

Right now I'm reading The Grimm Legacy (the concept for it is AWESOME! The girl is a bit of a whiny loser though) and DragonSpell which is good so far too! So many books, WAY too little time. Arghhhhhhhhhhhh!

Sep. 28th, 2011 12:37 am (UTC)
Oooh, the concept for THE GRIMM LEGACY *is* awesome!!! Definitely adding that to my TBR pile!!!

And yes....there's never enough time to read all the books we want to read, is there? Especially if we want to have time left to WRITE. And have lives. :P

Oooh, I just read the Goodreads summary and someone's review for Daughter of Smoke and Bone, and it sounds like it's going to be a book that's hard to put down! Let us know what you think of it! I'm thinking of getting a copy, but I'll wait to hear back from you post-reading binge. :)

I'm sorry to hear that you worked yourself sick. That sucks. My lymph nodes were swollen the other day; I freaked out and took really good care of myself for the next 24 hours and was beyond relieved when I couldn't feel my lymph node anymore. I have two weeks worth of exams starting next Wednesday. Yueck, can't get sick!

I read In True Blood by Truman Capote and Heart's Blood by Juliet Marillier. In Cold Blood was good--gave me the chills. Heart's Blood was okay; I liked it, but I'm still searching, searching, searching for a fairy tale retelling that really just hits the spot like no other (c'mon, 2012!!! hehe).

YAYYYYYY for finish QOG revision: part deux!!! YAYYYYYY for working on secret projects after a mini-reading-vacation!!!!!

ahhhhhhhhh, I always think it's prudent to help others, especially one SJMAAS, remember just how brilliant they are. *sigh* Look how far you've come . . . ^______^

*btw, on a totally unrelated note . . . I know that LTWF is on summer vacation just like the publishing industry is, but can you remind me again when the regular blogging is going to start up again? I forgot, but I can't wait. I loved the daily updates. :)

Yeah, people are looooving DAUGHTER OF SMOKE AND BONE! I'll definitely let you know what I think about it when I read it! :)

Two weeks of exams? Holy crap, that sucks. GOOD LUCK!!! And stay healthy!!!

And thank you so much for the encouragement re: QOG. You're amazing. :)

As for LTWF...A lot of us are super-busy right now, so I think we're still on the 3x a week schedule, BUT we're going to switch back to it at some point soon...We have some big changes coming up in January at LTWF, but it's all hush-hush for right now. :)

Hope you're well!!!!

Oooh good books! Have you read Lily of the Nile by Stephanie Dray? I LOVED it (it's about Cleopatra's daughter). Cleopatra's Moon is on my TBR, as is Daughter of Smoke and Bone (which I'm kind of scared to read now that EVERYONE ON THE PLANET is in love with it. Which is great, but intimidating).

I really liked both The Girl of Fire and Thorns and Witchlanders. Hope you like them!

Ouch, sorry to hear about your toe. Hope your toe and your cold are fixed soon :)

ugh, hope your toe feels better soon! i've found that sometimes taping it to the next one, or wrapping a band of tape around the 'knuckles' of the foot helps broken toes/feet feel better.

congrats on finishing the revisions! and will we know what your secrety stuff is at some point?

Well I just finished The Forest of Hands and Teeth and now I'm about to snuggle down with the book Grass For His Pillow, the sequel to The Nightingale Floor. And when I'm done with that I'll be reading Wicked, Mirror Mirror, The Golden Compass trilogy or His Dark Works or whatever lol, forgot what it went by. But yeah, that. The Looking Glass Wars and I know there are more but I can't quite recall at the moment. ^^;

Anyway, Congrats on finishing your revisions and I hope your toe feels better soon! I feel your pain, I broke my toe at the end of 2009. It ruined my entire winter break because it was swollen to the point to where I COULDN'T PUT MY OWN SHOE ON. ;-; And it hurt like hell. And it felt like someone was pulling my nail back, like tearing it right off very, very slowly. And I broke it by...walking. Yup, I was walking across my bedroom, going to get my blanket to snuggle in and BAM, I dripped over my cable wire and my big toe bent back and CRACK. I hopped back to my bed hissing in pain like "JEEZ I JUST WANTED MY BLANKET! ;-;" ^^;

OMG OUCH!!!!!!! I seriously cringed while reading that!!! Aghiasgiasngkasngkang. How long did it take for your toe to heal? I've heard breaking your big toe is a bit worse than breaking the others...I only broke the tip of the toe next to my big toe--it certainly doesn't seem as traumatic as your experience!!!

And ooooh--I hope you love the GOLDEN COMPASS! Those books are some of my all-time favorites. :)

Yay for finishing Revisions Part Duex!!! And for fighting through a cold. People treat colds like they're no big deal, but they can suck soooo much.

I'm so jealous of all your reading time. My cushy class schedule this semester has suddenly morphed into two weeks of midterm doom. Seriously, last week I had time to seclude myself in the library for hours on end so I could just write, write, write. But this week I'll be lucky if I write for a few hours top, and next week is looking just as ugly. It's quite sad :(

But once these tests are behind me, I have some awesome weeks with barely any work, and I plan to spend most of my free time reading/writing. I've hear about so many great books out right now, and I'm dying to get my hands on them.

I know!!! I think colds can be just as debilitating as the flu or other sicknesses! I was SO out of it for days and days.

And blugh for so much school work...though i'm glad you found some time last week to write, and will have so much free time after your tests!!! I haven't picked up SHATTERHEART yet, so if you want to/need to send me a new draft or anything like that, feel free! I can't wait to dive into it!!!!

Great to hear from you, as always!!! :)

That's so awesome that your on a reading binge! I just recently went on one as well. In the past 2 weeks I've read the first 3 books of the Obernewtyn Chronicles, Magic Under Glass, and I'm just now starting Alphabet of Thorn. I'm only 90 pages into AoT and I have a feeling I'm about to become McKillip addict. Her writing is like a reading orgasm, if that makes any sense lol. She paints such beautiful images in my mind and I often have to reread her sentences just to savor them longer!

I can now totally understand why you raved about her so much when you went through your McKillip phase. =)

I have a SERIOUS problem in that I always pick waaay to many things to read and never end up getting to any of them! I'm like OOO I want this and this and this and this and that one. So this time around (going to the Library is a weekly thing for me) I'm doing better! Right now I'm reading, Dark Cities Underground which has a great concept, but her mythos is sort of falling apart at the end. I still like it. Also reading the newest in the Mortal Instruments series, < href="http://www.amazon.com/City-Fallen-Angels-Mortal-Instruments/dp/1442403543/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1317404064&sr=8-3">City of Fallen Angels</a> which so far I'm enjoying, even if the characters do get a little *CHOKEY MOTIONS of frustration* at times.

All these books you're reading sound awesome, I've put them on my GoodReads to read post :D. Fablehaven sounds AWESOME, I love concepts like this, that somewhere through some magical door is all the neat mythological things humanity has talked about for thousands of years :D. Congrats on surviving Revisions Part Deux!

GAH! Why did it take me forever to see that you've updated!? BAH!

One: CONGRATULATIONS ON MAKING IT THROUGH REVISIONS! I think that nasty cold is making its way EVERYWHERE because I had one myself. And non-drowsy medicine totally lies. Never believe it.

Two: HOORAY FOR READING BINGE! Let us know how it goes! :D

Three: Randomly breaking your toe SUCKS. I did that last fall. Running into a child. Seriously. I spiral fractured my pinky toe. MY PINKY TOE. Because a kid stopped too fast in front of me. I spent three weeks in a boot (and couldn't drive), the doctors were baffled at how I'd broken my toe THAT badly running into a kid's sneaker, and everyone now jokes that I kick children. Upside is, you don't have to drive to work every day, right? :D

Enjoy the reading binge and congrats again! You are DEFINITELY a real hardcore author person! :D

Hope writing is going well!!!! <3
