Celaena Through The Years

I recently received an email from a long-time fan of QUEEN OF GLASS (back from my FictionPress.com days), asking if I remembered her/her QOG fan art. And, of course, the answer was YES. I cherish every piece of fan art I've ever received...I actually have them all printed them out and stored in a folder...and when I'm feeling bummed, I'll open it up and flip through all of the amazing, incredible artwork. I have ZERO artistic ability, so I'm always stunned by how talented these people are--and kinda jealous!

Most of the fan art I've received over the years has been of Celaena Sardothien, the heroine of QUEEN OF GLASS. For those of you who don't know much about QOG, Celaena is an eighteen year-old assassin, who loves shopping, books, and fine dining. Okay, there's more to her than that. Like the fact that she spent a year in slavery for her crimes, and that the King of Adarlan potentially offered her a second chance at freedom if she eliminates his enemies (keyword: POTENTIALLY....she's first got to prove herself trustworthy...or go back to slavery). Oh, and then there's her dangerous, secret past. And her penchant for getting into trouble. And her somewhat murky relationships with the playboy Crown Prince of Adarlan and the brooding, honor-obsessed Captain of the Guard.

Basically, she's a hot mess. And I'm always fascinated by how the readers of QOG choose to portray her in their artwork. So, without further ado, here are a few examples of Celaena fan art I've received over the years.

This one comes from Ericka, who captured Celaena PERFECTLY. The expression on her face (I can totally imagine her about to say some nasty retort), the coloring...It's awesome. And I love the hair--it's so flowing and pretty and aghaisgnaksg! In case you're wondering, Ericka was the reader who emailed me this week, asking if I remembered her...ERICKA, HOW COULD I POSSIBLY FORGET SOMETHING LIKE THIS?! Check out the full-size image here (which you should, because I had to shrink the picture really small to get it to fit into my lj). And be sure to stop by Ericka's DeviantArt page

This one...where do I even begin with this one? The hair? The glass sword? The awesome use of color? I GASPED when Justina Wong sent me this digital painting. Do you know that she did this painting for her final project for her photoshop class? BEYOND awesome, right? You can see the full-size image here (and look at the amazing detail with the eyes! Celaena actually has blue-gold eyes, but these are so awesome that I might change my mind...hehe). And definitely check out Justina's DeviantArt page!

This one was made years ago by Andrea Stewart--who is a super-talented artist! I remember her sending me this painting throughout the entire creation process--from the first sketch, to the gradual inclusion of color, to painting the background, to the awesome final product! It was really incredible to watch it develop! If you get a chance to look at the full-size version (you can see it here), check out the detail around the eyes (yeah, it's all about Celaena's eyes, lol)! And I LOVE the sleeves of her dress!

This one was recently made by Tempest, using all kinds of crazy photoshop skills that I don't have (nor will I ever possess). She NAILED Celaena's eyes, and I loooove the shadow of the castle in the lower right side! I also love the colors in this--the gold and the gray/clouds...and then the use of the lighting/shadows is EPIC. Agh, I absolutely adore this! You can see the full-size version here.

You can see more of Tempest's work at her DeviantArt page

Obviously, I've been blessed with not only amazingly dedicated fans, but also amazingly TALENTED ones, too. I don't deserve them--I really don't.

There's a ton of other fan art that I haven't yet had the chance to share, but I'll post more of it in the future!!! To all of you who have sent me QUEEN OF GLASS fan art over the years...THANK YOU. I'm beyond flattered and humbled--you have no idea how much it means to me!!!

Thank you! (am I allowed to say thank-you for artwork that isn't mine??)

And I totally agree--I WISH I could draw/paint/photoshop like these guys...I'm beyond jealous of their talent!!!!

(I think so? I mean, if I were to say "Wow the cover artwork for Eye of the Chosen is incredible", you'd say thank you... Hmm)

Your fans are incredible--I'm humbled to be in such amazing company. :)

Haha, good point!!!

:) You're humbled? I'M humbled. I'm as humbled as humbled can be!!!! lol...

Haha, no--that's Savannah's novel, ANTEBELLUM! Which is AMAZING.

In a very, very tiny nutshell, QUEEN OF GLASS is an epic YA fantasy retelling of Cinderella...where 'Cinderella' is really an assassin sent to kill the prince on the night of the ball. There's a bit more info about it on the QOG goodreads page: http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/7896527-queen-of-glass

I totally remember seeing some of that fanart across the web! When I first read QoG on FictionPress, I quickly surfed DeviantArt and the web for QoG fanart. Seriously, I was so obsessed with QoG, you have no idea. I even drew some of my own fanart that is still up on my defunct DA (but I don't think it turned out very well :P). But yeah, I would put off chores to read QoG. That would lead to my mother coming into the computer room and telling me off, to which I would reply "SHH!". That didn't go over very well, but I still love QoG! :D

:D :D :D Omg, that is AWESOME. You should send me your QOG fanart! The next time I share some more fanart, I'll include it (or keep it private, if you want me to)!! :)

Thanks for continuing to be a QOG fan!!!! <3 <3
Aug. 18th, 2010 08:03 pm (UTC)
I'll send you a message with the fanart, but I'm warning you, it's not very good. Seriously, it was three years ago when I didn't really grasp lighting, structure, coloring...or anything artistic, really. But, I hope you enjoy it, nonetheless!

Oh, and I'm definitely still a QoG fan! I'm going to pre-order it before it's out on the market, if I can. :)
Aug. 18th, 2010 08:11 pm (UTC)
:D I'm sure it's AWESOME. I can't draw to save my LIFE. Seriously. Even my stick people look deformed. <3

And YAY for pre-ordering...I'll probably have a heart attack the day QOG is available for pre-order on Amazon.

Stop making me jealous of people's artwork. I WISH I could draw like that. Or use photoshop. Or have photoshop on this Mac,lol. I got it for my 19th birthday (along with microsoft word- lol I'm a nerd!) but it was for the PC. ((Btw, 19 is TWO years ago. thats insane!!) (It makes me want to pull out my pen and paper, lol. I used to take art classes for 3 summers and my grandpa was an artist. Unfortunately, all I got from him was, "Those are birds? PSH." ;-))

P.S. I finally read YOU WISH. Duuude we need to tawk.

Aug. 18th, 2010 07:54 pm (UTC)
Haha, I suck at drawing/painting/anything art-related. I can't even draw a straight line!!! It's sad, really.
Aug. 18th, 2010 08:10 pm (UTC)
I can draw people's faces (kind of) and I got the art award in 9th grade. (which is LOL worthy because my school had 50 people in it at the time.)
Aug. 19th, 2010 07:55 am (UTC)
Gah. Thanks for sharing the fanart.

I have to say I absolutely love the last one, by Tempest. There's just something in her eyes that makes you stop and stare, and wonder.

I can totally see it as a book cover! Hell, I'll buy it from the bookshelf (even if I haven't read QOG and known how good it it) just seeing the book cover and synopsis.
Aug. 20th, 2010 04:31 pm (UTC)
I know, right?!?! I absolutely adore that one. *sigh*
Aug. 19th, 2010 09:59 am (UTC)
Wow, you've got some absolutely GORGEOUS fanart there. I hope one day to be lucky enough to receive some as well. Hehe. I'd be so overjoyed as I did. Love the fanart! So pretty!
Aug. 20th, 2010 04:32 pm (UTC)
Thank you!!!!

I still FREAK OUT whenever I get fanart...like, running around, screaming kinda freaking out, lol. It never gets old. :) Hopefully you'll be a bit calmer than me when you start receiving fanart for your books!!!
Aug. 19th, 2010 12:07 pm (UTC)
I remember these old fan art especially the one we had as the picture on our veryyy old yahoo fan group page :) wow seems so ancient now!

be sure to show more of the fan art, and definitely ask these artists if you can reproduce some of these images on tshirts or like bags so when you run QoG promotions/competitions we can win theseeee.. SIGNED BY THE AUTHOER OF COURSE :DD

Aug. 20th, 2010 04:33 pm (UTC)
Yeah! The one by Andrea Stewart used to be the main photo on the Yahoo Fan Group!!! <3

I never thought about asking the artists to use these images on bags/t-shirts....really intriguing idea....

<3 you!!!

This makes me even more excited for the book release! Though I thought Celaena was in her early 20s...

Aug. 20th, 2010 04:40 pm (UTC)
Me too!!!!

Celaena was originally 22, but I lowered her age to 18 at some point during the revisions process.
Aug. 21st, 2010 01:32 am (UTC)
Ooh about the age. I must say I took a pause when you said she was 18 because I remember her being older than that. Are you gonna tell us why you made her younger? Or it is confidential? Gosh, I'm so excited for your book. =P

Aug. 23rd, 2010 04:32 pm (UTC)
lol, I made her younger because when my agent signed me, she thought QOG would work better as a young adult novel (I had queried her for an adult fantasy novel). As usual, my agent was 110% right, and part of making QOG a YA novel involved lowering Celaena's age to 18.
Aug. 21st, 2010 01:28 am (UTC)
The fan art made by Andrea Stewart is the famous one. Yeah, I always see this on your yahoo group. So if I ever see that painting across the street I am so gonna scream "that's Celaena!" or most probably "it's freakin S.J. Maas" LOL I'll never forget that artwork.

The one made by Tempest is also amazing!!! It's like a cover of a book! It's the kind of cover that will catch your attention and you have no choice but grab it from the bookshelf and see what's it all about. So yeah, big points for Tempest! Good job!

Aug. 23rd, 2010 08:27 pm (UTC)
Haha "the famous one" --I love it.

I know, isn't the Tempest piece awesome? She's SO talented.

Thanks!! :)

And I know the feeling--I want it to be 2011 NOW.

Alas, Raonn won't be appearing until later books, so you'll have to wait a bit longer for him. And most of QOG has been gutted and rewritten, so...you'll pretty much be reading a brand new novel/series! :)
Aug. 29th, 2010 12:08 am (UTC)
these artworks are gorgeous as always and I'm sorry what I'm going to say next is not too relevant to this post, but I was going through an old email account and saw the subject line from a yahoo group saying that the beloved queen of glass from my childhood was getting published, so I just wanted to stop by and say CONGRATULATIONS!!! (sorry I'm late to the party...) I imagine it must have been a long and arduous process and I am just very happy for you! Even back then, when I was reading it for the first time, I thought, this is so full of twists and turns, and the author's created such a compelling and multi-faceted character in celaena, I can't believe this hasn't been already snatched up by a publisher! I am really overjoyed for you and I can't wait to get my hands on a copy of your published novel come 2011! I wish you the best of luck with your writing career!

Birthday? Movie or tv show
When is her birthday I have looked it up like crazy. I mean I know she is from a book, but I want to know. If you could can you please tell me, even if you just make it up, I need to know. And also are you going to make a movie or tv show? I think a tv show would be better so you can savor the glory, but a movie series would be a lot easier to buy.
